BMI is a rough screening tool. It doesn't distinguish fat from muscle, doesn't account for body shape, and isn't appropriate for children, pregnancy, or highly athletic builds. Talk to a healthcare professional for a real assessment.

About this tool

Enter your height and weight to get your Body Mass Index, your category (underweight to obese), and the healthy weight range for your height. Choose between the WHO international cut-offs and the Asia-Pacific recommendation, which uses lower thresholds for overweight and obese and is widely used in Korea and Japan. BMI is a quick screening number — it ignores body composition, age, and muscle mass, so treat it as a starting point rather than a verdict.

How to use

  1. Enter your height in centimeters and your weight in kilograms.
  2. Pick the standard you want — Asia-Pacific (recommended in Korea) uses tighter thresholds than the WHO defaults.
  3. Your BMI, category, and the healthy weight range for your height appear instantly.

FAQ

  • Why are the Asia-Pacific cut-offs different?

Research shows people of East and Southeast Asian descent tend to have higher body-fat percentages at the same BMI as people of European descent. The WHO Asia-Pacific recommendation lowers the overweight cut-off from 25 to 23 and the obese cut-off from 30 to 25 to reflect that.

  • Is BMI accurate for athletes or muscular people?

No. BMI doesn't tell muscle from fat, so muscular people often land in the overweight or even obese range. Use body-fat measurements or a doctor's assessment if that's your situation.

  • Should I aim for the middle of the healthy range?

Not necessarily. The healthy range is wide because individual frames, activity levels, and body composition differ. Talk to a healthcare professional about what's right for you rather than chasing a number.

  • How is the healthy weight range computed?

It's the weight range that puts your BMI inside the "normal" cut-offs for the chosen standard — 18.5–25 for WHO, 18.5–23 for Asia-Pacific.
